The problem is when we’re on autopilot for so long that we forget we’re on autopilot. When we’re so involved in our lives that we can’t even acknowledge that we’re on autopilot then our lives become very, very boring.
I don’t know about you, but when I’m not thinking about what to do right this instant, I’m usually thinking about what I should do later. So if I’m on autopilot, I’m not likely to think about what to do right this second. A better example would be if I was driving somewhere and I was suddenly and incredibly anxious about something. My best friend would say, “No, you should be thinking about how to drive somewhere else.
Well, in that case, I would say, “Hey, I’m worrying about something.
This is exactly the problem with thinking about anything. Everything is relative. When you’re not thinking about what to do right this second, you’re just floating around in your head with no ability to do anything. If you think like this, you’re actually not thinking about anything. You’re just looking at your phone.
You can do a lot of things by thinking about what you want to do. Like, when you just finished watching a movie, thinking about what you want to do next is really the most efficient way to get yourself out of that space and into the next one. I like to think of this as the “Aha!” moment. When you suddenly realize that the problem you were thinking about was just a small problem that you could fix with a little bit of creativity.
You might not think you have a problem, but you certainly do. The problem you were thinking about is that you didn’t have time to think about it. And if you spent a little time thinking about it, you can get yourself into the next space. And you know what, that’s the most amazing thing.
